-
Keep students on track to graduate, passing courses the first time.

Prepare students for college-ready graduation
Tutorials proven to increase student achievement
Introduced in October 2013, Apex Learning Tutorials have enabled personalized learning and improved student outcomes in districts across the country. Tutorials are proven effective: in a national study of Tutorials use during the 2014-2015 school year, student pretest to posttest scores improved 20 percentile points.
With lessons designed specifically for the ever more rigorous state tests and college readiness exams, Apex Learning Tutorials are proven to increase student achievement, enabling students to succeed on exams and to master the content and learn the skills they need. Now with new adaptive capabilities, the enhanced Tutorials identify learning gaps and provide the remedial instruction necessary to prepare each student to master prerequisite and grade-level content.
With the addition of adaptive remediation as a feature of Tutorials:
-
Pretests identify gaps in prerequisite knowledge.
-
Just-in-time remediation occurs as students learn grade-level concepts.
-
The individualized learning plan adapts to focus student learning on what they need to learn.
With Tutorials, teachers can ensure students have mastered concepts throughout the year. Teachers can also be sure students have mastered grade-level content and material before students transition from middle school to high school, or from high school to college.
For example, the Beaverton School District in Oregon uses Tutorials to ensure middle school students are prepared for the rigors of high school. Tutorials enable teachers to offer each student personalized support and just-in-time remediation to prevent students from falling behind. This personalized support also helps build student confidence, which further improves learning outcomes.
Adapting to individual student needs
The newly updated Tutorials provide students with access to supporting topics. Supporting topics are additional modules with prerequisite concepts that are needed to attain mastery of grade-level concepts. When a student is struggling within a topic module, supporting topics are recommended to provide remediation.
Unit pretests now also assess for prerequisite skills, identifying knowledge gaps and determining readiness for grade-level concepts. Students complete a pretest, which includes questions on both grade-level topics as well as supporting topics. An individualized learning plan is then generated, identifying what is needed to be successful in the unit.
Meeting district needs
The new adaptive remediation feature of Apex Learning Tutorials is available to school districts at an opportune time, as districts face mounting challenges:
-
Many districts have experienced a decrease in state and local funding, while at the same time incurring increasing facilities and pension costs.
-
The teacher shortage shows no sign of easing up any time soon.
-
Student populations are increasingly diverse, as the overall number of Latino, African-American, and Asian students in public K-12 classrooms is expected to surpass the number of non-Hispanic white students this fall.
-
Since 2011, 45 states have raised their standards for student proficiency in reading and math.
-
The college readiness gap has grown increasingly wide, with 75% of high school graduates ill-prepared for college.
-
Finally, the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) demands even more of districts, calling for rigorous and fair accountability for all levels of school performance; serving diverse learners; and providing more students with a fair chance to succeed.
With active, personalized learning and student-centered instruction, Apex Learning Tutorials with adaptive remediation are effective for "just-in-time" remediation to get (and keep) students on track, preparing them for rigorous state examinations, and ensuring they graduate college-ready.
Adaptive Tutorials are available now, as of June 2016. Tutorials are currently offered for 6th through 12th grade English and math, as well as for high school biology and U.S. history. College Readiness Tutorials for the SAT, ACT, ACCCUPLACER, and TSI as well as GED are also available.
