A recipient of a Race to the Top grant, Metropolitan School District of Warren Township is seeking to redefine its traditional educational paradigms through a district-wide 1:1 initiative that provides state-of-the-art technology to all students and staff. District administrators understand that a significant investment in technology alone is not going to achieve the academic gains desired; the purpose of the initiative goes beyond providing each student with his or her own device and Internet access. Digital Curriculum to Meet the Needs of Each Student
Access to technology coupled with a flexible, comprehensive digital curriculum is providing new options for students to meet graduation requirements. "We wanted to find a digital curriculum that allows our teachers to do more than they could without technology. Our goal is to implement a curriculum that provides students with new methods of exploring, testing, and applying their knowledge in a format that excites and motivates them," explains John Keller, Director of eLearning. Impressed by the successful track record in increasing student achievement, and the breadth of its curriculum catalog, an administrative review team selected Apex Learning. Offering Comprehensive Courses for original credit and credit recovery, and Tutorials for targeted instruction, the district has a broad digital curriculum solution to address a variety of instructional and program needs.
Leveraging technology made available through the 1:1 initiative enables the district to change how and when learning takes place. The standards-based curriculum provides students with opportunities to recover credits, earn initial credit, or complete elective courses previously not offered by the district. Students are able to complete course work on campus or remotely through the district's virtual school program. "We are at a critical juncture in how we engage students in learning," says Keller. "We want to extend learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom." In the long term, the school plans on scaling the virtual program to support more students in a greater variety of subject areas.

According to Keller, digital curriculum offers new options for supporting students with a wide range of needs by enabling teachers to provide individualized instruction to each student. As students self-pace through the curriculum, they develop critical thinking skills and achieve a deeper understanding of the content by making decisions, participating in interactive exercises, and completing challenging but achievable activities.
The benefits of digital curriculum extend beyond the student experience by providing teachers with real-time insight into student learning. This critical information ensures teachers can provide each student with the personalized support he or she needs to stay on track. "Real-time data makes it possible to intervene when and where the student is struggling. We no longer have to wait until a student fails a test to discover the student didn't understand the concept," says Keller. District administrators are able to offer rigorous, standards-based digital curriculum that enables them to meet the needs of each student and provide an alternative to the one-size-fits-all classroom.
